Right hand in a trench coat

I hope you like things because I like things.

 Dear Science,
The allure’s always been there, though it’s often manifested itself in different ways. It probably started with that giant illustrated encyclopedia of animals that I had when I was 5 years old. It’s also likely that at this point in life I’m unfairly projecting my current love of science onto a young version of myself. (In my defense, seahorses are as awesome now as they were then.) Later on in my education I could see a glimmer there in the eyes of those who had chased science and known her touch – a glimmer that would shine for a brief moment after a thorough answer bolstered with just the right questions; a glimmer that said ‘Don’t worry. You’ll see her soon’.
From a young age I’ve often seen signs that science can be a fair muse, one that offers up some tangible result for my time and attention. Science is also a cruel mistress – like any love worth chasing, she doesn’t want half-hearted efforts or lazy thoughts. Creativity is encouraged; the things that are tailored just for her needs are the best received. You’ll go places together – provided you’re willing to do the legwork. Oh, but get a little too cocky or let your attention stray and she’ll humble you real quick.
The thing that really makes the pursuit worthwhile is that there’s a truly visceral joy, a sense of excitement and wonderment and pure relief when the data lines up and you realize you’re seeing something that nobody else has ever seen. You think then that maybe, just maybe, science loves you back. That moment is one that hangs suspended, like that brief moment after the first kiss with that one you’ve been chasing for so long, tugging at heart strings and letting you know that it’s all been worth it.
